国技（こくぎ）とは、一般には、その国の特有の技芸、ある国の代表的な競技のことである[1]。たとえば一般的には、スポーツ競技や武術 等々である。

ただし、厳密な定義は存在しておらず、“事実上の”国技であるものもあるし（米国のベースボールなど）、各国の法令でわざわざ定めてあるもの（デ・ジュリ）もある（カナダのラクロスやアイスホッケーなど）。また、その国で最も人気のあるスポーツとも必ずしも一致していない。日本で言えば相撲がそれに当たるとみなされることがある[1]。

基準

広義の国技は、人によってさまざまな意味で使われるが、おおむね次の二つのどちらかの意味で使われることが多い（国花・国鳥と類似する）。

国家機関によって特別の地位・待遇を与えられているもの
例：パト（アルゼンチン）、アイスホッケー（カナダ）
国民に深く親しまれ、その国の文化にとって特に重要な位置を占めるという考えが提唱され、一定の範囲で広められているもの
例：相撲（日本）、野球（アメリカ合衆国）

前者の場合は、国家機関から法令等で正式に「国技 (national sport) 」としての地位を認定されている。後者の場合は、歴史が古く、その国の伝統文化と深く結びついていると愛好者の間でみなされていれば国技であるとする考えもあれば、現在国民の間に人気が高く、競技者人口や観戦者人口が多ければいいとする考えもあって、定まった意味内容はない。また、アメリカ合衆国では歴史的に野球が国技だと見なされていたが、近年の世論調査では、野球に取って代わり、アメリカンフットボールこそが国技であるという意見が主流を占めるなど[2]、時代によって変化することもある。

国技の条件として、その国で生まれたものでなければならないと考える者もいる。しかし、国民から深く愛されているスポーツが、外国に起源を持っていることが判明するというケースも珍しいものではない。

国民的スポーツ
国技と呼ばれているスポーツでも、必ずしもその国で人気ナンバー1のスポーツとは限らない。確固たる人気を得たスポーツであっても、様々な理由で国技として認知されないことがある。特に、そのスポーツが「外国から輸入されたもの」という認識が強く、より一層自国の文化に根ざしたスポーツや伝統武道が他に存在する場合には国技と見なされないケースが多い（例：日本における野球、中国におけるバスケットボール、フランスにおけるサッカー）。この場合、「国民的スポーツ」などという表現をすることが多い。
一方で、海外から伝わったスポーツが国技としての地位を得るに至った国も多い（例：台湾における野球、英連邦諸国におけるクリケット）。
また、国技として認められるには至らないが、世界大会などで常に上位を占める競技をお家芸などと称し、国技に準ずるものと考える場合がある。

日本の国技

相撲は古くからの伝統を持ち、公式に制定されてはいないものの、相撲関係者の間では日本の国技という認識がされている。

日本国内において、相撲を国技と見なす風潮が一部に存在するが、日本国内に正式な国技はない。過去及び現在においても、その時代を担った政権に相撲を正式な国技と認定した記録や法令は存在しない。日本にはすぐれた技芸が多数あるが、それぞれの技芸を行う人々は、自分が行っている技芸に誇りをもつあまり、それを「国技」と見なしたがる傾向がある。例えば一例を挙げると柔道関係者の中には、柔道も日本の国技だと考えている人がいる。なお、宮内庁から天皇杯を下賜されている武道は、相撲（大相撲、アマチュア相撲）、柔道、剣道、弓道である。このうち大相撲の天皇賜杯は最も歴史が古く、特に大きい。

国技が相撲であるという考えが提唱されることになった起源は、1909年（明治42年）に両国に初めて相撲常設館が完成した際、それが「国技館」と命名されたことであるとされている。これは3代尾車親方（大関：大戸平廣吉）が命名委員会（会長：板垣退助）に提案し、了承されたものであるが、それは6月2日に行われた開館式で作家の江見水蔭が執筆した披露文に「相撲節は国技である。」という内容が書かれていた事に由来したものである。

なお、財団法人大日本相撲協会が財団法人日本相撲協会に改称する際に監督官庁である文部省（当時）に提出した寄附行為の第3条には「この法人は、わが国固有の国技である相撲道を研究し…」と明記されて省令認可されている（昭和41年文部省令第6号）。ただしここで述べられている「国技」はあくまで「相撲道」全体であり、興行としての大相撲を特定して宣言しているものではないことに注意が必要である。興行としての大相撲は、同寄附行為の次条で法人の行う事業として9つ挙げられているうちの一つ、「力士の相撲競技の公開実施」の部分に過ぎない。

判例としては、平成22年4月19日、東京地裁（渡辺弘裁判長）が元露鵬及び元白露山の両名が解雇無効を訴え地位確認を求めて提起した訴訟の判決において、他のスポーツと比較しての処分が重過ぎるとの主張を「国技たる相撲を他のスポーツと比較することは適切でない」として退けた。
