Requests for bot approval

Summary of the Bot policy

1. Respect m:Bot policy, WP:B#Additional_guidelines, and relevant policies.
2. Identify your bot on its user page using the {{bot}} template.
3. Provide following information on both the bot's user page and the approval request:
   • Details of the bot's task (or tasks)
   • Whether the bot is manually assisted or runs automatically
   • When it operates (continuously, intermittently, or at specified intervals), and at what rate
   • The language and/or program that it is running
4. Keep intervals of 10 (ten) seconds or longer between edits.
   • During the peak hours, try to refrain from running your bot, or slow it down at intervals of 20 (twenty) seconds or longer.
5. Unflagged bots shall not edit many pages at high speed.
   • Edit at intervals of one minute or longer when editing 200 or more pages without bot status.
6. When requesting for approval of your bot, demonstrate a test run of 40 to 200 edits.
   • If the task is maintaining interlanguage links or fixing double-redirects, you may start a test run without prior consensus.
   • If local users found no problem, a bureaucrat may grant bot status to your bot.
7. List your bot in Wikipedia:Bot.

The initial task of PALZ9000 will be to fetch Two-line elements (orbital trajectory information) from the Heavens-Above website and add it to a sub-page of the relevant space station article, so that editors can transclude it to the article. There are no copyright issues for the Heavens-Above website according to the owner, Chris Peat, whom I initially contacted about images for the article about that website, Heavens-Above.

PALZ9000 parses data of the source page HTML with BeautifulSoup then updates wikipedia page using pywikipedia, the data is copied into Template:ISSIB.

  • I think it may be useful, but on jawp nobody knows how to use the data.     • ありがとう comments from the other editors are very important to me. I am very happy to wait. If it helps to give more information, the heavens-above site gets data for each space station on average once per day, at different times with no real schedule. There are 4 space stations, so new information is on average 4 times per day, but the robot only updates at half that rate, every 12 hours, and only the one template so the history is hidden from view.   • (reseted the indentation) Sorry to delay responding. I'm one of bureaucrats in jawp. Mr.赤の旋律 retired from bureaucrats, so I will help you instead. I have found this bot is useful and effective for ISS template. However, I doubt whether this work needs bot flag or not. There was no opinion in the two talk pages.     • Hey thank you for responding, and sorry I take a long time to respond too, I don't check the page as often as I did in the first 9 months or so :D I think that PALZ could have a flag just for being so incredibly boring ! So that people checking the recent changes can filter him out along with the other bots. (Don't worry, I won't increase his edit speed, he has nothing else to do except the ISS). Just seems like he is a boring bot. sometimes I think to remodel his userpage, so he is more acceptable for Japan, but I think nobody looks, so I do other work. So I think for 特別:最近の更新 it is good for everyone that PALZ has a flag. well thanks for the 'approval' even if there is no actual official flag to go with it. He will continue doing what he has always been doing.

About wikidata, I don't know about it. I do know the first rule of not breaking things is do not fix what is not broken. Palz does the job, he has always done the job, there are many other jobs that don't get done, so I should fix those things first. Penyulap（会話） 2013年5月8日 (水) 13:42 (UTC)
