マイケル・シルヴァスティン（Michael Silverstein、1945年 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の言語学者。シカゴ大学で人類学、言語学、心理学の教鞭をとる教授。記号論や言語人類学分野の理論家である。研究歴の中で、語用論、社会言語学、言語イデオロギー (language ideology)、記号人類学 (semiotic anthropology)、統語論などを取り上げ、それを文化の中の言語として包括的に説明してきている[要出典]。そのほかにも、シルヴァスティンはチャールズ・サンダース・パースによる記号論の術語、特に指標性（indexicality）概念の普及に貢献しており、メタ語用論 (metapragmatics)、メタ意味論 (metasemantics) といった概念を創出し[1]、いかなる言語や社会生活の理解においても、メタ意味論現象が中心的な重要性をもつことへの関心を喚起し、言語イデオロギーをひとつの分野として開拓した[2]。シルヴァスティンの業績は、その複雑な用語法と技術的難解さで知られている。

シルヴァスティンは、ハーバード大学で学部教育を受けた後、同じくハーバードにおいて、ロシア人の言語学者、記号論者で、文芸評論家でもあったプラハ学派の流れを汲むロマーン・ヤーコブソンの下でPh.D.を取得したが、ハーバードでは論理学者で哲学者であるウィラード・ヴァン・オーマン・クワインの下でも学んだ。1982年、シルヴァスティンは制度創設2年目のマッカーサー・フェロー (MacArthur Fellow) に、当時最年少で選出された。シルヴァスティンは、ハーバード・ソサエティ・オブ・フェローズ (Harvard Society of Fellows) の人類学分野のジュニア・フェローのひとりである。

シルヴァスティンは、「言語イデオロギー」がひとつの研究分野として確立される上で大きな影響力をもった。言語イデオロギーとは、言語やその機能、その話者について、社会的に基礎づけられた信念、概念規定である[3]。ベンジャミン・リー・ウォーフやチャールズ・サンダース・パースの業績を踏まえ、構造主義、文献学、歴史、社会理論の知見を総合し、シルヴァスティンは、話者がその言語を使う際の導きとなり、最終的には言語に変化をもたらすようなパターンとして、「言語イデオロギー」を捉えた。私たちが話すときには、言語によって、また、言語において、私たちがなし得るものがあると信じることが前提となっており、また、そうする（話す）ことによって私たちは私たちの言語を形成していくのである。したがって、言語イデオロギーは、言語のパターンと社会的文化的構造の間を架橋する、社会的に基礎づけられた信念であり、言語が何であるかについての、また、言語が特定の理解可能な用法に変換されるという信念は、言語がこうした信念、予想される結果に適合することが正しく理由となって支えられる。用法と信念の結びつきは、「メタ語用論」として経験的に捉えることができ、（目上の人物に対して話しかける際に丁寧な言い方をするように）言語の用法の中において、用法についての信念の表明がなされることになる[4]。

シルヴァスティンの業績は、人類学、言語学、社会言語学において、理論上、概念上のシフトを引き起こした。それは言語的相対論（サピア＝ウォーフの仮説）への新たな関心につながった。また、シルヴァスティンの業績は、チョムスキー派の言語概念への批判に新たな観点を加え、社会における言語の研究に、批判的かつ政治的に微妙な潮流を起こし、特に言語政策、言語計画、言語教育の研究に影響を及ぼした[要出典]。
