The XJ40 replaced the XJ Series I to III, (although the Series III was sold concurrently until 1992 when discontinued). A lot less body panels were used in building the XJ40 compared to the Series III, this meant cheaper to build and lighter. The XJ40 was more angular, loosing some of those classic Jaguar lines. The interior of the XJ40 was trimmed with either walnut or rosewood, and either cloth or leather upholstery (depending on model.) Models available were; The base XJ40; 6 cyl, Quad round headlights, black window frames. The V12 got a black grille and 4 speed auto Sovereign; Rectangular headlights, chrome window frames, Air con, rear self-levelling suspension Sport; introduced in 1993, alloys, rosewood interior trim (as opposed to the walnut trim of other models.) Both the door mirrors and radiator grille vanes were body colour XJR; performance model, uprated suspension and engine, bodykit, black grille, alloys and sports interior Daimler versions were also available, they were the highest trim versions, in 6 cyl or V12, they also got a fluted grille surround.
