ゲイリー・ローレンス・フランシオン (Gary Lawrence Francione, 1954年-) は、アメリカ合衆国の法律学者。Rutgers School of Law-Newark大学の法律教授でニコラス・カッツェンバック哲学と法律の研究者 [1]。

フランシオンは動物の権利の理論の草分け的存在として知られていて、動物の権利をアメリカの法律大学で初めて学術的に教義したことでも知られている。[2] 彼は以下の3つの問題に集中する。

  1. 動物の所有物としてのステータス
  2. 「動物の権利」と「動物の福祉」の違いについて
  3. この動物の権利の理論では「知覚、意識」のある動物を対象としそれぞれの動物の特性や特徴故での差別はしない

フランシオンは動物の権利：廃止論の abolitionist theory of animal rightsパイオニアであり、従来の搾取への規制法animal welfare では理論的にも実際的にも動物への待遇向上の効果は聞かれないとし、逆に消費者が心理的に動物を使用しやすくしてしまう逆効果になると指摘する。[3] 彼は非人間種＝動物の必要な権利はただ一つしかない、それは人間の所有物やモノにならない権利のことだと議論する。[4] そして廃止論的アプローチの道徳のベースラインはヴィーガニズム - すべての動物使用の拒絶をすることから始まると述べ、動物の権利は、非暴力的な権利活動＝ヴィーガニズムの実践と教育で達成できるはずだという。 [5]
